Personal Background
Jessica Ebelhar is an editorial and advertising photographer based in Louisville, Kentucky. She went to Western Kentucky University: B.A. in photojournalism, geography minor. From an early age, she was always consumed with books, magazines, and newspapers. When she wasn’t reading, she could usually be found taking photos along the long, solo bicycle rides through the country that filled her weekends. Throughout high school she spent her spare time shooting everything around her, including her friends in those ephemeral summer hangout sessions that make memories for a lifetime.

Style
Her specialities include portraiture, food & beverage, still life & conceptual and lifestyle work. She loves shooting a variety of subjects but portraiture is her passion. Her portrait makes viewer bright and positive, since she uses warm color and put some highlight into a photo. She also makes positive story to the photo, which makes warm mood. Her photo makes emphasis by the color. She says, “I think people connect with brighter images because, simply put, color is fun, And in the right context, color is energizing.” It is shown in her photos, which are colorful and reveals her high sense of color vision.

Philosophy
When she read the Kentucky Kernel student newspaper as a freshman at the University of Kentucky, she was stuck by the thought of her own pictures appearing in print. Then, she started to learn strong photojournalism program at Western Kentucky University. Despite her years toting a camera, photojournalism didn’t come easily for her, and she truly had to work for it. Since she is a photojournalist, and editor, she has to take a picture of the details that match to the articles. Also she is required to take pictures that tells the situation or condition from one photo, and depending on circumstances, she has to change what she want to express. Documenting lots of moments of history, she eventually felt a pullback to Kentucky, her hometown. Sometimes scene from her assignments still take her back to those first bike rides with her disposable camera, which shows her love of her hometown, and her most important thing at the bottom of photojournalism.

Influences
I was influenced by her creativity and her sense of color vision in photography. For example, the photos below, she uses green background to emphasize the asparagus and the shape of shadows of them. Also, she placed the asparagus in random order, so that she can create balance to the photo. In the same way, photos of lemons and limes have unity since she uses similar color for the background, and the green limes emphasize more. I thought her photos are simple and clear but colorful. This made me to become conscious about the color balance and the unity of the photo, when taking the pictures.

Compare and Contrast
Compared to the original photo, my photo looks different than them. It was very difficult to copy the original picture without the same materials. For example, I didn’t had the same background as her. So I had to buy the background of similar color, but the camera made the colors look different. The camera angle also made the photo looks different, when I took the second photo. I also figured out that the light she was using was not the natural light, which the one I used for the photo. Since I didn’t have the light that spots the object, I suffered on the shadows from the third picture. However, I tried hard working on the position of asparagus from the first photo, in order to make exact same photo from her work.

Personal Artist Statement
For the first photo, I was aware of the photo’s darkness from it, which I really like about the original photo. The difficult thing about it was to create shadows. Natural light can make it bright, but not as dark as what I wanted. I worked hard to tone down the light, when editing, without reducing the image quality of itself. The second photo was hard because there was not enough background to cover the whole photo. Since we could see other scene when I took this picture in the same way as the original one, I changed the camera angle so that the background fits in the photo. It became different mood from the original one, but this work creates a positive and bright mood. I took the third picture because I like the brightness of the original photo. It was difficult to edit because when I wanted to make brighter so that the photo become more vivid, the color went away, which I really wanted to express. I worked hard on emphasizing the lemon and lime, since the color was too light. However, I think the graduation of the background went well even though it became dull.
